Mug wrap sizes, handle gaps and Mug Press compatibility
Mugs differ from tumblers in one way that matters for the template: the handle. The wrap stops short on both sides of it, so the printed width is the circumference minus the gap. Straight ceramic mugs then give a plain rectangle, while conical latte mugs give a deep curved sector that needs the cone calculator.
| Mug | Top / bottom Ø | Gap | Shape | Cut size | 300 DPI | Mug Press |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11oz Classic Mug | 82.0 / 82.0 mm | 42 mm | Rectangle | 8.49 × 3.50 in | 2547 × 1050 px | Straight wall, 82–86 mm: listed size range |
| 15oz Classic Mug | 85.0 / 85.0 mm | 48 mm | Rectangle | 8.62 × 4.00 in | 2587 × 1200 px | Straight wall, 82–86 mm: listed size range |
| 12oz Conical Latte | 90.0 / 63.0 mm | 40 mm | Sector 41.72° | 9.35 × 4.46 in | 2804 × 1337 px | Tapered: not for Mug Press |
| 17oz Conical Latte | 90.0 / 62.0 mm | 42 mm | Sector 28.61° | 9.38 × 6.25 in | 2814 × 1875 px | Tapered: not for Mug Press |
| 14oz Camping Mug | 86.0 / 86.0 mm | 50 mm | Rectangle | 8.67 × 2.99 in | 2601 × 898 px | Stainless: use an oven or mug press element |
The compatibility column follows Cricut's published limits for the Mug Press: straight wall, 11 to 16 oz, 82 to 86 mm across, sublimation-ready coating. Check your own blank against the press instructions; a mug inside the diameter range can still fail if its wall bows or its coating is not rated for sublimation.
Working out a conical latte mug wrap
The 17 oz latte preset measures 90 mm at the rim, 62 mm at the base and 150 mm along the wall. Those numbers give an outer radius of 18.98 in and an inner radius of 13.08 in, so the template is a slice of a fairly small ring. With the 42 mm handle gap the sector spans 28.61° and the cut box is 9.38 × 6.25 in.
| Handle gap | Outer arc | Inner arc | Angle | r1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 42 mm (preset) | 240.7 mm | 152.8 mm | 28.61° | 482.1 mm |
| 30 mm (slim handle) | 252.7 mm | 164.8 mm | 30.03° | 482.1 mm |
The radius does not change with the gap, because the cone itself does not change. Only the arcs and the angle do, and both arcs shrink by the same number of millimetres. That keeps the printed edges parallel to the handle, which is what makes a latte mug template look straight on the finished mug.
Bringing the SVG into Cricut Design Space at the right size
The blank SVG stores its width and height in inches or millimetres. After uploading, open the size panel and compare the width with the readout bounding box before you attach artwork. If you use Print Then Cut, check Cricut's printable-area limit for your machine, which is smaller than the cut limit on the mat.
For sublimation you print rather than cut, so the SVG mostly acts as a guide: place your design under it, clip to the cut layer, and export. The test-fit PDF is the faster sanity check for mugs, because you can wrap the paper around the mug in seconds and see the handle clearance before committing paper and ink.
Making a mug wrap that clears the handle
Pick the mug
Load a latte, classic or camping mug example, or type your rim, base and wall height.
Measure the handle gap
Measure across the handle joint, add clearance, and type it; both arcs shorten by the same amount.
Check press and mat
Read the Cricut mat line and the table above; tapered mugs go in an oven or a conical press.
Print the test strip
Print the test-fit PDF at 100 %, check both rulers and wrap it around the mug.
Use cases
- Mug Press shops
Keep 11 oz and 15 oz straight mug templates at exact size and check new mug blanks against the 82 to 86 mm range before buying a case. The tumbler wrap size chart has every mug next to the tumblers.
- Latte mug gifts
Conical mugs need the sector; once it is right, warp a rectangular image to the tapered shape and download the 300 DPI PNG.
- Handle tumblers
The 40 oz tumbler wrap template uses the same handle-gap logic on a two-zone body; tumblers without handles work in the main tapered tumbler wrap template generator or the 20 oz skinny page.
- Unknown blanks
Read how to measure a tapered tumbler: the same tape-and-caliper method works for mugs, and it shows what a 1 mm error does to the angle.
Questions makers ask
Which mugs work in the Cricut Mug Press?
Cricut lists the Mug Press for straight-walled, sublimation-coated mugs from 11 to 16 oz with an outside diameter of 82 to 86 mm (3.2 to 3.4 in). Conical latte mugs and other tapered mugs are outside that list, so press them in an oven with shrink wrap or on a press with a conical element instead.
What size is a Cricut Mug Press wrap template for 11 oz and 15 oz mugs?
For an 82 mm 11 oz mug with a 42 mm handle gap the template is 8.49 × 3.50 in, the familiar 8.5 × 3.5 in. A 15 oz mug at 85 mm with a 48 mm gap gives 8.62 × 4.00 in. Both are straight rectangles, so the free SVG imports into Design Space as a simple frame.
Why does a conical latte mug template look like a rainbow?
A latte mug flares strongly, so the rim can be 90 mm across while the base is about 62 mm. The unrolled side becomes a deep sector; the 17 oz preset spans 28.61°, and the 12 oz one even more because it is shorter. A rectangle on that shape would wrinkle along the whole rim.
How much handle clearance should a mug template leave?
Measure the handle joint across the wall and add 3 to 5 mm per side. The presets use 42 mm on 11 oz and 17 oz latte mugs and 48 mm on 15 oz mugs. The gap is the same width at the rim and the base, so both arcs shorten by exactly the gap you type.
Will the template fit on a Cricut 12 × 12 in mat?
Cricut lists an 11.5 × 11.5 in maximum cut area on the 12 × 12 in mat for Maker and Explore machines, and 11.5 × 23.5 in on the 12 × 24 in mat. Every mug preset here is under 11.5 in wide with bleed, and the readout states the check for whatever you type.
