Tapered wrap dimensions are calculated from exact conical frustum geometry. Because blank tumblers vary by manufacturer batch, always print the free 1:1 paper test-fit strip and verify the 1-inch / 10-mm ruler before pressing sublimation transfers.

    Why it curves

Why a straight wrap will not sit flat on a tapered tumbler

A tapered tumbler is a cone with its tip cut off, a shape geometry calls a frustum. Its rim is longer around than its base, so the paper has to be longer along the top edge than the bottom edge. Unrolled, that side wall becomes a band cut from a large ring, and that curved band is the template this page draws for you.

On the default 20 oz skinny the rim is 9.03 in around and the base 8.16 in. A rectangle sized to the rim leaves about 11.0 mm of loose paper at the base on each side of the seam, which bunches into a fold or prints a crooked join. Curving the band removes the slack completely.

    The math

The frustum formula, worked through on a 20 oz skinny

Every number on the workbench comes from three measurements: top diameter D1, bottom diameter D2 and the slant height s along the wall. Overlap O and handle gap W are added or removed as the same width at both rims. Similar triangles on the cone give the two radii, and each arc length fixes its own angle.

    Arc lengths
    C1 = π·D1 − W + O   ·   C2 = π·D2 − W + O
    Radii
    r1 = s·D1 / (D1 − D2)   ·   r2 = r1 − s
    Angle
    θ = C1 / r1 (radians)   ·   vertical height h gives s = √(h² + ((D1 − D2)/2)²)

The radius is long, about seven feet, which is why the curve looks gentle. That is also why a tapered tumbler template calculator has to work numerically rather than with a compass. The downloaded SVG and PDF are checked against these values: drawn arc lengths and the radial height stay within 0.1 mm of the formula.

    Seam and edges

Seam overlap, bleed and the safe zone

Three allowances protect a sublimation tumbler wrap from white gaps. Seam overlap lets the end of the print lie over its start. Bleed extends colour past the cut line so trimming and shrink wrap never expose bare paper. The safe inset keeps names and faces away from the rim and base, where the paper lifts first and colour ghosts.

AllowanceTypical valueShown on the template asRaise it when
Seam overlap2–6 mm (0.08–0.25 in)Cyan band at the right endThe seam shows a hairline gap after pressing
Bleed2–3 mm (0.08–0.12 in)Red dashed outline, round cornersYou trim by hand or the rim shows white
Safe inset3 mm (0.12 in)Grey dashed lines inside the rimsText sits close to the lid ring or base
Handle gap38–50 mm on mugsOrange edges and dotted gap arcsThe handle is thicker than the default

Bleed changes the print size but not the cut line, so the readout lists both. A 20 oz skinny with 2 mm bleed grows from 9.18 × 8.22 in to 9.34 × 8.38 in, which is why it tiles across two Letter sheets while the bare cut shape almost fits one.

    How to use it

From a tape measure to a pressed tumbler

    1. Pick or measure the blank

Tap a ready-made example, or enter top, bottom and height. Switch to circumference or vertical height if that is what you measured.

    2. Check both viewports

The flat template and the wrapped cup update together. Confirm the seam closes and the outer arc matches your rim plus overlap.

    3. Print the test-fit PDF

Print at 100 % on plain paper, measure the 1.00 in and 10.0 mm rulers, then wrap the paper around the blank.

    4. Export and press

Download the 1:1 SVG for Canva, Cricut or Silhouette, or the free 300 DPI warped PNG, then mirror and press as usual.

    Where it fits

    Use cases

    • Skinny tumbler shops

Most orders are 20 oz skinnies, straight or tapered. The 20 oz skinny tumbler wrap size page starts on the 9.3 × 8.2 in standard and flips to the tapered body in one click, so you can tell which one a buyer actually owns.

    • 40 oz cups with a handle

The quencher style needs an upper band with a handle cutout and a separate lower taper. The 40 oz tumbler wrap template solves both zones together and shows the gap lined up with the handle on the cup.

    • Mugs and Mug Press projects

Straight mugs, conical latte mugs and camping mugs all need a handle gap. The Cricut Mug Press wrap template and latte calculator adds a mat-size check and explains which mugs the press accepts.

    • Finished designs from Canva or Procreate

If your art is a flat rectangle, warp the rectangular image to the tapered tumbler in the browser and download a 300 DPI PNG that keeps the top edge on the wide rim.

    • Checking a size before you buy blanks

The tumbler wrap size chart lists 18 blanks with angles and pixel sizes, and the guide on how to measure a tapered tumbler covers tape, caliper and slant height.

    Software

Importing the template into Cricut, Canva, Silhouette and Illustrator

The blank SVG is a tumbler wrap template generator output meant to be a frame, not artwork. It carries four named layers so you can hide the guides you do not need. Import it once, place your design underneath, clip it to the cut layer, and keep the bleed outline as your colour boundary.

ProgramHow to bring it inCheck before printing
Cricut Design SpaceUpload → Upload image → choose the SVG; keep it as a cut imageSize panel equals the readout bounding box; for print-then-cut, the mat limits apply
CanvaUploads → upload the SVG, lay it over your design as a sizing guide, then hide it before exportPage size at least the print size with bleed; export as PDF Print
Silhouette StudioDesigner Edition and above open SVG directly from File → OpenUnits set to inches or mm, scale at 100 %
Illustrator or AffinityOpen the SVG; layers appear as groups named cut-outline, bleed-outline, seam-overlap and safe-zoneArtboard matches the SVG width and height

Whatever program you use, the test-fit PDF is the final check. It tiles automatically when the print is bigger than your paper, with 10 mm overlaps and orange registration crosses, and every sheet carries both rulers so you can confirm the printer did not scale the page.

    FAQ

    Questions makers ask

What is a tapered tumbler wrap template?

It is the flat shape that rolls up into the side of a cone-shaped cup. Because the rim is wider than the base, the shape is a slice of a ring, called a sector, not a rectangle. This tapered tumbler wrap template generator draws that slice from your measurements so a printed design closes evenly at the seam.

Should I measure the diameter or the circumference?

Use whichever you can measure better and switch the toggle. A soft tape around the rim gives the circumference directly and avoids reading a caliper at an angle. The generator divides by π internally, so 9.03 in around equals 73.0 mm across. Measure the rim and the base in the same place you plan to print.

My tumbler barely tapers. Why is there still an angle?

Even 3.5 mm of taper per side changes the circumference by 22 mm between rim and base, and a rectangle cannot absorb that. On a 20 oz skinny the angle is only 6.22°, but printing a rectangle instead leaves about 22 mm of extra paper at the base of the seam, which folds or shows as a crooked join.

How much seam overlap should I add?

Most sellers use 2 to 6 mm, or about 0.1 to 0.25 in. Overlap adds the same width at the rim and the base, so the inner and outer arcs grow by the same amount. Add more if your blanks run large or your shrink wrap pulls the paper; the cyan band on the template shows exactly where it lands.

Will the SVG come in at the right size in Cricut Design Space, Canva or Silhouette?

The SVG stores its width and height in real inches or millimetres, with a millimetre viewBox, so programs that honour physical units place it at size. Always compare the size panel with the bounding box in the readout before cutting, and print the free test-fit PDF once per new batch of blanks.

What do the paid production packs add on top of the free files?

The free tier gives the exact template, both previews, the 1:1 SVG, the test PDF and a 300 DPI warped PNG. A pass adds a production pack with mirrored bleed and seam ticks, a six-size Etsy seller bundle, and gang sheets that nest mixed blanks on one sheet with crop marks and tape guides.
